Anselm Kiefer at White Cube, Bermondsey

Making no apologies for posting about the magnificent Anselm Kiefer exhibition, Walhalla, again – on at the White Cube Gallery, Bermondsey to this weekend, 12 February 2017 – this is to say that wheelchair access to the exhibition is great too.

Here, I’d like to briefly bang on about how easily accessible the White Cube Gallery and the exhibition are.

From our first call of enquiry, the staff were really helpful both in assurances that wheelchair access was fine and in allowing us to park on their forecourt. You do have to call for the parking as the forecourt has automated bollards to restrict casual access but the space was immediately offered to us as soon as we asked about accessible parking.

When we arrived, I was thrilled to see a decent space and level ground – so easy to let the ramp down and just get in.

The Gallery has wide doors and level floors – poured concrete, I think – very nice for my wheels.

There was just one of twelve room spaces – partitioned spaces change for different exhibitions – that I couldn’t get completely around because the exhibit was extravagantly spread but I was able to see enough to not feel disappointed at all.

We did arrive quite late in the day when it was busy but not teeming so the wheeling was easy for me and not discomforting to other visitors. The White Cube Gallery do reserve the right to stagger prams and baby buggies at busy times and, I guess, lots of concurrent wheelchairs would be similarly so filtered.

This makes sense to me as the exhibits are up close, putting the art and other people at risk should crowds be thronging. It’s just something to bear in mind when planning a visit and you could ask when are the best times to avoid a rush if it’s a concern to you.

And, that’s it. Great art. Brilliantly accessible. Ending 12 February 2017.
