I love New York.
But one of the banes of travel in a wheelchair is ensuring accessible transport availability in any city other than your own.
New York has been surprisingly nightmarish on this front … and I’ve been several times in my years of being a wheelchair user.
Not so much lately because, although I have coped, for each visit, I had the same problem sourcing a very limited number of wheelchair accessible cab options.
Never the same firm, always dealing with different people, transitory business locations and contact numbers plus having to schedule all activities way in advance – like 48-72 hours notice for any desired trip – to meet booking schedules does not make for a comfortable holiday. When you add in the legendary rudeness of many New York cabbies and that our usual stop-off time in New York is for 4-6 days only … let’s say our tolerance for travel to New York has become low.
And, I hate that because New York is one of my favourite places to go away. Me&D, we’re city peeps and have been going to New York for … forever. We miss it.
I do know that New York buses are meant to be very accessible but, as in London, me&D find it impossible to manage on public transport – it makes the getting-there-&-back a too long part of the limited time I am able to be out, is just too joltingly painful for me to endure and managing me plus baggage – even just shopping let alone luggage – is too tortuous to be a pleasure for either of us.
The only way we can cope, physically, is to be dropped door to door and, this being true in London, is the more so in unknown terrain.
We need our holiday time to be easy not, as it so often is, a gritted teeth endurance test – let me say that a few days of the latter feels less like a holiday than a gruelling boot camp exercise. Not enjoyable at all.

How It Works
Accessible Dispatch is a taxi dispatch service specifically designed for and available to the disability community living in or visiting New York City.
Once our service is requested, we will dispatch one of New York City’s wheelchair-accessible taxicabs directly to your pick-up location in Manhattan. Accessible Dispatch is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and requires absolutely no advanced reservations, although you may place an advance service order if you so wish. There are currently 233 yellow wheelchair-accessible taxicabs operating in the City of New York. Each of these vehicles is equipped with GPS vehicle location equipment and is viewable by our call center dispatchers 24/7.
Other services require passengers to make an accessible ride reservation a day or more in advance. Accessible Dispatch is an on-demand taxicab dispatch service, providing a taxi at your door at the time you want it without having to schedule in advance.

I really hope they get enough demand to stay in business – other, similar, firms we’ve used haven’t and goodness knows why. You’d think there’s be enough demand, wouldn’t you?
